This alternator is a direct replacement on 73 and up GM vehicles, till approx. 86, but can be used on earlier GM vehicles with the simple addition of a spade connector that goes to the ignition. It hooks up exactly as the OEM unit does. The voltage regulator is internal. This gives you the opportunity to eliminate the external voltage regulator as well as the mass of wires going to it on vehicles before 73. This unit actually fits in place of the early model external alternators. GM did not change the physical size or design of the case when internal alternators came about in 1973. This really adds to the look of your engine, not to mention the dramatic increase in charging power. It’s one of the bestselling items we have.
